Today, Google Doodle Is Honoring Jamini Roy with “Black Horse”

The Indian Painter Jamini Roy received the Google doodle today. With this, the search engine giant celebrated their 130th birth anniversary. Roy is known for giving a unique and novel style of painting to the world. His artworks were based on Bengali folk art.

The great artist Roy was born on April 11th, 1887 in West Bengal. He belonged to Beliatore village of Bankura district on the state West Bengal. He was the student of Government College of Art in Kolkata. At his college, Abanindranath Tagore was the founder of Bengal school and vice-principal. Although he was trained in classical western style but later on inclined to his motherland style of folk and tribal art.

His prominent inspiration came from Kalighat Pat style which required bold brush strokes.

Very soon after that, he was away from all oil and canvas paintings. He had accommodated his newly discovered style in everything he painted. He covered gods of puranic Hinduism including Lord Ram and Krishna and their different incarnations. He mostly relied on colours like cadmium green, Indian red, yellow ochre, vermillion, white, blue and grey. He saw quite success when he infused his painting upskill with the folk art.

In 1940s, he was on the zenith of this career. He had many exhibitions organized in London and New York. In the year 1954 he was adorned with Padma Bhusan award. In the year 1972, he passed way.

In the year 1946, his artwork, “Ramayana” is considered as his magnum opus and is manifested in 17 canvases. It said that, Roy gave it a finishing touch in Kalighat pata style with the help of natural colours. In his artwork, Ramayana starts with Valmiki and touches the end till SIta’s agnipraiksha.

Today, Google is acknowledging this great artisan by displaying his Black Horse painting.
