Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad introduced the Triple Talaq Bill in Lok Sabha Today.

The bill prepared by a ministerial panel which was headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, which makes criminalizes the practice of instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat in any form in spoken, in writing or by electronic means as SMS or Email and would be jailed for three years for the husband. The bill also has a provision for the divorced Muslim women to have the custody of their minor children. The offenses under the purview of this bill will be cognisable and non-bailable.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that we must understand the pain of Muslim women, Today morning I read a news that a woman in Rampur was given talaq by her husband just because she woke up late.

But before he introduced the legislation opposition parties like RJD, AIMIM, BJP, Indian Union Muslim League oppose it from their benches. While JPN Yadav of RJD questioned the proposed three-year jail term, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi said Parliament lacks the legislative competence to pass the law as it violated fundamental rights.

After the introduction of the bill was approved, Ravi Shankar Prasad said the legislation was not aimed against any religion but was framed to provide a sense of justice, security, and honor to women, the law was required as even after the Supreme Court had struck down the practice of  “talaq-e-biddat” in August.
