Here’s How Unpaid Internship Exploiting Career of Youngsters In India

Unpaid internship in india

All of us are endowed with a dream of a perfect job. Because apparently, an individual with a reputed company stamped on his resume is a must these days. India is a vast country with hundreds of reputed companies expanding their business here. After all, with a huge population like ours, finding a hard working employee won’t be difficult. As a matter of fact, companies are now making potential employees do useless errands in the promise of providing a ‘decent job’.

A solid Curriculum Vitae is one with a good amount of experience. But no company will hire you until you have the required experience. Irony being that you won’t get any experience until someone hires you. It is a viscous circle of corporate world where a highly qualified candidate is made to work as an intern without pay.

work not for free - the unpaid internship

It is a myth these days that Internships are for skill generation. The harsh truth is, if a company wants something very basic to be done, they advertise the openings for interns. And once you’re there, it makes no sense for the company to pay the interns. The cause being that if you say no, they will find someone else who’ll agree to do it for free. These companies use their brand reputation to lurk freshers with the overrated ‘certificate’ or a Letter of Recommendation.

Sadly, not a lot of big companies offer internships where you can actually learn some valuable industry skills. You are on your own once you leave the safe haven of a students’ life. Playing with the pure intention of a fresher of having a successful career, these days a lot of companies have started using fancy terms like hip group, creative atmosphere etc to glamorize this form of exploitation. What these students ignore is the fact that in the excitement to be a part of such cool crowd, they completely miss the point of an internship – getting ready for their field of interest. Using a fancy term for unpaid internship doesn’t change the fact that you are, in fact, being exploited.

What is more disturbing is, for every student who asks for stipend, there is always that one person who is willing to do it for free. Who would want to pay for something which can be easily done for free. In this race of success, our generation is ready to ignore the plight of their fellow candidates in order to bag an opportunity in a big company, irrespective of how exploiting it will be.

This practice of exploitation can be put to an end only if everyone is willing to take a firm stance together. You are the future generation of our country and this is not the kind of a future you would want to strive for.
