Vijay Gokhale takes charge as Foreign Secretary today succeeds S Jaishankar

S Jaishankar who has served as foreign secretary for three year in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure retires today. He was appointed on January 28, 2015 as the foreign secretary. He took over this position by replacing Sujata Singh. Now, this position is taken over by diplomat Vijay Keshav Gokhale. This appointment has been done by appointment committee last month. Mr. Gokhale will serve as foreign secretary office for two-year tenure.

Who is Vijay Keshav Gokhale?
Vijay Keshav Gokhale is an Indian Foreign Service officer from 1981-batch. Gokhale was Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). He has played a critical role in resolving the Doklam crisis. He has served as India’s Ambassador to China from 20 January, 2016 to 21 October, 2017. In fact, he held the position of India’s top envoy to Germany. Talking about the workings of Vijay Gokhale, he was also at the posts of director (China and East Asia) and joint secretary (East Asia).

S Jaishankar is an IFS officer from 1977-batch. He has played a major role in handling several issues beneficial for India. He is considered to be architect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy.
