23rd April is celebrated as the World Book day across the globe. This day is observed with an aim to encourage reading, promote publishing and copyright. Also known as World Book and Copyright Day, it was fist held on 23rd April, 1995. The event is organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This is a symbolic day for world literature.

On this day, the UNESCO and the international organizations select the World Book Capital for a one-year period every year. Every year, UNESCO devotes this day to a social cause. This time, 70th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be commemorated.
Celebrations on World Book Day
On this occasion, various social events will be held to celebrate the power of books and to bring us together and to transmit the wisdom among diverse cultures. At the UNESCO headquarters, workshops, exhibitions and lectures etc will be conducted for public. In fact, in various parts of the world, various kinds of activities will be held.
What is World Book Capital?
Comprising the three major sectors of the book industry- publishers, booksellers and libraries, UNESCO and the international organizations select the World Book Capital for a one-year period starting from April 23.
