World Consumer Rights Day: If you are a customer, you have these perks at your disposal

There are various consumer rights available to us as citizens of India. But do we avail them? Well, the bitter answer is No. Who would go to another extent to claim that meagre Rs. 50 spent on that fairness cream which has a chemical ingredient you were allergic to, missing on it’s cover. This is when Consumer Rights Day comes into effect.

Here are the 7 consumer rights which have been introduced to secure your interests against any malpractices.

Right to the satisfaction of basic needs

We have access to basic, essential goods and services: adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, public utilities, water, and sanitation.

Right to safety

This right entails the safety of consumers from hazardous goods. To be protected against products, production processes and services that are hazardous to health or life.

The right to be informed – To be given the facts needed to make an informed choice, and to be protected against dishonest or misleading advertising and labelling.

Right to choose

The right to exercise discretion in choosing it’s product from a range of different products.

This right ensures that there are various varieties of a product being offered in the market by different sellers. This leads to neck to neck competition, thereby reaching at an appropriate price for all. It also ensures standard quality.

Right to be heard

A consumer is entitled to raise it’s voice. Now, this right ensures that your voice is heard and acted upon.

The government agencies take note of your opinion, suggestion or compliant. Your concern is also eternally integrated in the production process of goods and services.

Right to redress

This right assures the consumer that it’s complaints will be heard. There will be a proper redressal mechanism to resolve the issues of customers.

Right to consumer education

This refers to the right to acquire knowledge and skills which are essential to make informed and  rational choices about goods and services. It also encompasses spreading awareness about basic consumer rights and responsibilities and how to act on them.
