To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in year 2018, 2019 and 2020, the Indian Railways has proposed that no non-vegetarian food will be served to passengers within the premises. Hence, if this proposal is approved then October 2 will also be celebrated as ‘Vegetarian Day’ along with Rashtriya Swachhta Diwas. Know more.
As we all know that Mahatma Gandhi is India’s most-famous ambassador for vegetarianism so this observance is a mark of respect to Mahatma Gandhi. This idea is proposed when the central government planned a special commemoration Gandhi’s anniversary. This is all mentioned in a circular issued by Railway Board.
Other events to do on Gandhi’s anniversary
Apart from observing ‘Vegetarian Day’, the railways plans to run a ‘special salt rake’ from Sabarmati on March 12 to commemorate the Dandi March and ‘swachhata express’ trains from Sabarmati to various stations connected with Gandhiji. In fact, tickets with watermark of Mahatma Gandhi’s image will also be issued.
There are also plans of thematic painting of all stations connected with Mahatma Gandhi. In fact, setting up of digital museums depicting significant activities undertaken by the Father of the Nation are also in list. Murals of Gandhiji at all divisional headquarter stations and zonal headquarters have also been proposed.
Even a special logo has also been proposed to be displayed outside a train coach near the doorway where seat numbers are displayed. This logo is being designed by the Ministry of Culture.
For the special commemoration, Railway Board plans are subject to approval from the Ministry of Culture which is the nodal ministry.
