In a distressing incident captured on video, Syed Mazahir Ali, an Indian student residing in Chicago, was seen bleeding profusely after being attacked by robbers. The footage showed him pleading for help as he suffered injuries to his nose and mouth.
His family in Hyderabad has expressed grave concern over the incident and has appealed to the Indian government, specifically Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, to ensure Ali receives appropriate medical treatment. Additionally, they have urged for arrangements to be made for his wife, Syeda Ruquliya Fatima Rizvi, and their three minor children to travel to the US to be with him during his recovery.
Ali, a master’s degree student at Indiana Wesleyan University, was reportedly pursued and attacked by a group of four individuals near his residence in Chicago. He described the harrowing ordeal, stating that he was assaulted after slipping near his house, pleading for assistance during the assault.
This incident adds to a series of tragedies involving Indian students in the United States this year. Recent cases include the death of Shreyas Reddy Beniger, Neel Acharya, Vivek Saini, and Akul Dhawan, all of whom were Indian-origin students. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety and security of Indian students abroad.
