Amid criticism for not wearing warm clothing during the Bharat Jodo Yatra despite the winter chill, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said Monday that he decided to wear only T-shirts during the march after meeting three poor girls “shivering in torn clothes” in Madhya Pradesh.

“I started walking in Kerala. It was hot and humid. There was a slight chill when we arrived in Madhya Pradesh. Three poor girls in ripped clothes approached me one day and asked for a photograph.

She shivered when I hugged one of them. On that day, I resolved to put on a sweater the day these children receive one. “I’ll only wear a T-shirt until I don’t shiver,” Gandhi said.

During Uttar Pradesh-leg of the yatra last week, Gandhi had said that the media is highlighting his attire but taking “no notice of the poor farmers and labourers walking along with him in torn clothes”.
