PV Sindhu, the ace shuttler who has made India proud time and again has been chosen as the flag bearer of the Indian contingent at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Sindhu will be leading the Indian badminton’s charge at the 2018 CWG which is to be held at Gold Coast, Australia.

The Hyderabad-based badminton player was selected by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Friday evening as the flag bearer of the event. The opening ceremony will be held on April 4.

This is going to be the first time in the last three editions of CWG that a badminton player has been appointed as the flag bearer. Earlier, in the 2006 edition, shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was the flag bearer followed by Abhinav Bindra and Vijay Kumar at the 2010 and 2014 editions.

Just last week, Sindhu reached the semi-final of the All England championship and hopes are pretty high regarding the CWG as well. Talking about her previous performances other than the silver at RIO, she had bagged a bronze at CWG in 2014 in women’s singles. She also won a silver medal at the last year’s Badminton World Championship.

Considering PV Sindhu’s consistent performance, she is one of the key players at the event for the singles as well as for the missed team event. The mixed team event will take place on first five days of CWG while the winners will be decided on April 9.

From India, a total of 222 athletes will be taking part at the CWG from 15 different sports. These include athletics, badminton, aquatics, basketball, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, weightlifting, squash, shooting, table tennis, and para-sports.
