Dim Diwali for Delhiites as SC bans firecrackers till November 1

The annual festival Diwali may not be the same for residents of Delhi NCR region this year as the Supreme Court (SC) banned the sale of firecrackers ahead of the annual festival on October 19.

Even last year, SC had ordered a ban on the sale of firecrackers. However, the government failed to ascertain the impact of the decision on the pollution levels. As another attempt to compute the difference on Delhi’s pollution level, SC roped in a competent agency to ascertain the difference of this scheme on the pollution levels in the city.

In tandem, the SC also banned all licenses issued by the government to the firework agencies and shops.

How does Aam Janta react to SC Verdict?

The common Indian men cherish the ritual of burning crackers and filling the sky with sparkling lights. However, due to the SC verdict, Delhi residents will have to forgo their wishes and refrain from burning crackers.

Some also say the Court should have given some relaxation in this regard. However, they were highly appreciative of this initiative to flush out unnecessary pollution in Delhi air.

However, the larger question is will this step result in full compliance from all the residents. Considering SC’s verdict, it is clearly stated that sale of firecrackers is banned. However, it didn’t in any way communicate the prohibition on burning crackers. Delhiites may travel to the nearest cracker shop in the adjoining areas to buy crackers, without resulting in any non-compliance to the SC’s rule.
