Govinda Birthday Special: 3 Films of his Career that Prove he can do much more than Comedy

Govinda, the famous comedian of Indian film industry celebrates his 54th birthday today i.e. 21st December. Usually, we have seen him in colorful trousers and floral printed shirts dancing to the tunes of catchy songs. However, there is a side of the actor which is rare and is probably underappreciated.

Undoubtedly the actor is unbeatable when it comes to comedy and quirky dance moves but a very few people know that he has done some amazing serious roles that were critically acclaimed. The 90s was an era when Govinda was the number 1 choice of directors and he has given numerous hits with David Dhawan but the actor was equally good at serious roles.

Listing down here are three roles of the actor that proved his brilliance as a performer:

Awaargi (1990)

Awaargi, a film by ace director Mahesh Bhatt is now considered to be a classic. Although the leads in the film were Anil Kapoor and Meenakshi Sehshadhari, Govinda was also critically acclaimed for his work. Unlike many other roles where Govinda is seen as a vibrant, lively, over-the-top character, here he maintained his calm and presented a class act.

The story is a love triangle between the three actors where the girl tries to balance her respect for one and love for another. Amidst the chaos created by typical Bollywood villain played by Paresh Rawal, the three characters find their way to make a settlement in the situation. There is love, there is drama, and there are feelings emoted beautifully by the actors.

Shikaari (2000)

Shikaari is a multi-starer movie featuring Govinda, Karishma Kapoor, and Tabu where the three are unveiling murder mysteries. It’s not a typical love triangle but something more interesting and off-beat. Govinda was appreciated and loved for his villainous role in the film as he tries to hide his true identity and has a narrow escape while Karishma suspects his intentions. It’s definitely one of the best works of Govinda where he easily changes his identity, commits crimes, and then pretends to be an innocent man by manipulating the female leads.

Kill Dil (2014)

Kill Dil was a recent one which came in 2014 and was in a way Govinda’s comeback film. Although the film was not a hit the actor in the role of a gangster seems to do full justice to his role. The film failed to connect with the audience but they surely loved Govinda as an antagonist.

Usually one would find goons and dons to play either very cruel or they are disguised as a social worker but here Govinda played a gangster who can kill ruthlessly but will also dance when he is having a party. People are scared of him when he is angry but they are also having fun with him on a birthday celebration.
