Harmful ingredient Saccharin used in orange ice-candies: Jaipur Laboratory Test Reports confirm

Did you know that Ice candy manufacturing companies can put our health at stake? Recent laboratory test reports revealed that a manufacturing unit of ice-candies was illegitimately using saccharin as an artificial sweeter in producing ice-candies which we love to savour on summer days to beat the scorching heat.

What is Saccharin?

Saccharin is 300 times sweeter than sucrose. It is commonly used as sugar. It is a preferable source of sweetening for the manufacturers as sugar is relatively more expensive than saccharin

If health experts are to be believed, saccharin is harmful to children, especially under-14 years.

Saccharin also has adverse affects on bones of the children.

Ill-Benefit to manufacturers…

Manufacturers leveraged the growing demand for ice-candies in the market due to scorching summers. With an intention to make higher profits, manufacturers used saccharin in orange candies which are sold in large quantities. Because saacharin is cheaper than sugar, manufacturers had replaced sugar with it, thereby putting consumer’s health at risk.

What is the verdict of health departments?

When the health department officials reached the factory, they discovered that the manufacturers were using saccharin in orange ice-candies. The food safety officers had collected two samples of ice candy and milk candy.

Also, officials had collected 60 samples of milk, ice creams and juices from April 23 to May 31.

The test report released by the department confirmed that the ice-candies were ‘unsafe’ for consumption.

Lesser fat quotient in the ice-candies was also found, against the prescribed limit as per Food Safety and Standard Act. The health department had destroyed 1,000 ice-candies which had saccharin as its ingredient.

To top it all, the health department also unearthed a manufacturing unit at the Jaipuriyon Ka Bagh at Sirsi Road on May 6. Reports of 13 samples are yet to be received by the department.
