Despite a six-wicket loss to the Kolkata Knight Riders in their last IPL 2023 home game, Sunday was a momentous event for Chennai Super Kings and their supporters at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Despite the loss, the scene was upbeat at Chepauk, spectators soaking in the occasion as Dhoni led the squad in a lap of honor.
Sunil Gavaskar ran after the gang of CSK players and begged CSK star Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his signature as they strolled around their home ground. In fact, the former India captain requested Dhoni autograph his shirt, a poignant gesture from one game giant to another.
There has been much conjecture regarding whether Dhoni will participate in his final IPL match. While he has not verified it, Chennai supporters have showered the wicketkeeper-batter with unrivalled adoration throughout the season.
Dhoni was also seen smashing balls into the crowd and flinging jerseys to the throng. Even the local cops on the scene were caught up in the event, as they were spotted shaking hands with Dhoni before signing his autograph.
“Mahi is unique. He is a unique captain. “There hasn’t been a captain like him and there will never be another like him,” Gavaskar said of Dhoni earlier this season.
