Lalit Modi’s assault comes just days after Rahul Gandhi was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison in the 2019 defamation case over his comments about the Modi surname, which resulted in his disqualification as a Lok Sabha MP.
At an election gathering in Karnataka’s Kolar, Rahul Gandhi said, “How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?”
In a succession of tweets, Lalit Modi questioned why he was being dubbed a “fugitive,” claiming that he had never been convicted and thus is a regular citizen. He also blasted opposition leaders and accused them of “vendetta.”
“I keep hearing from Tom Dick and Gandhi associates that I am a fugitive from justice.” Why? How? And when have I ever been guilty of it? Unlike Pappu alias Rahul Gandhi, I am now an average citizen stating it, and it appears that all opposition leaders are either sick or have nothing else to do.

Lalit Modi said in another tweet, tagging several Congress officials and claiming that they all have assets overseas, “I can give locations and pictures, etc. Let us not deceive the people of India, who are true criminals. The Gandhi family has acted as if they are supposed to govern our nation. Yes, I will return as soon as you enact strict liability legislation.”
