No-shave November vs Movember- What to opt this November ?

No-shave

November is the beginning month of winters and with it comes the trend of not shaving. For men, November is also synonymous with fashion and un-groomed raw look. No- Shave November and Movember hashtags crowd the social media platforms with people proudly showing off their beard growth.

Surprisingly, only a fraction of people are aware that No- Shave November and Movember are actually two different things. The names might sound similar but both are different charity groups that raise money and awareness for good causes.

No-Shave November is a “web-based, non-profit organization devoted to growing cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research and education.” The foundation was started in 2009 by the Hill family of Chicago who lost their father Matthew to colon cancer in 2007.

This cause encourages both men and women to let their hair grow. “Participate by growing a beard, cultivating a moustache, letting those legs go natural and skipping that waxing appointment.” The goal is to grow awareness by embracing hair growth, which most cancer patients lose.  The money which was saved on shaving and grooming is donated for cancer prevention.

The Movember Foundation is a charity that only works for men’s health on a global scale, year round. This foundation was started in 2003 by two Australian friends (Travis Garone and Luke Slattery) and now have 5 million “Mo Bros and Mo Sistas”. By 2015, the movement spread globally and raised more than $710 million which helped them expand their reach to 21 countries.

Men are supposed to be clean shaven and focus on growing and grooming their moustache for the next 30 days in order to raise funds for men’s health. Initially, this movement was started to bring back the old classic stache look however, the men soon realized how much of a conversation starter this topic was. hence, they decided to use it to start meaningful conversations.
