The electoral college comprises elected members of both Houses of Parliament along with elected members of the legislative Assemblies of all Indian states. However, members of upper and lower houses are not eligible to vote.

A nomination application may be rejected due to small glitches. To avoid the possibility of cancellation, the leading candidates including Ram Nath Kovind and Meira Kumar have had to file nomination papers thrice, thereby contributing to an excess of nominations from limited candidates.

MPs and MLAs available to back a particular candidature will be considered legal and valid. Others will be considered as void. A total of 4896 voters including 4120 MLAs and 776 elected MPs are eligible to cast their ballot. Not only this, a Rs 15000 fee is also required to be attached along with the candidate nomination papers.

On July 24, the 5-year term of incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee ends and hence the process of selecting a suitable candidate must start soon. The last day to file nomination papers is July 17.
