Six people have died in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir after heavy rains and cloudburst were reported in the region last night. Their bodies were recovered by the authorities today. According to the sources, 11 people have been injured and several houses and shops have been damaged including a school building.

Doda, which falls in the Jammu region has witnessed heavy rainfall this monsoon season. The Flash floods triggered by cloudburst hit Thatri Town at 2.20 am resulting in a massive increase in the level of the riverbed flowing along the Jamai Masjid locality close to the town. The water level and the silt suddenly rose after the cloudburst, washing away several structures along its path leading to the main market.

Earlier this week, landslides due to heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district had forced the authorities to temporarily suspend traffic on the arterial Jammu Srinagar highway that connects Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. The Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway (NH1B) has also been closed due to huge boulders at Thathri market triggered by the cloudburst.

However, the extent of the damage and exact loss of life and property could not be straight away ascertained as the rescue team Is still in the middle of the rescue operations trying to save those who are still trapped under the debris.  The entire district administration along with the police and Army has already started a rescue operation.

According to the sources till now five members of a family and a 12-year- old boy that have been shifted to a hospital in Thathri have been rescued. Three members of a family are still feared to be under the debris and the team is trying to remove the debris as soon as possible to rescue them.  Apart from this the water supply pipes and power supply remained snapped in the area.
