Sri Lankan Navy Detains 14 Indian Fishermen

Sri Lankan navy has detained 14 Indian fishermen along with their boats from near the Palk Strait earlier this morning on 19th November. The area Palk Strait is located between Tamil Nadu and Mannar district of Northern Province of Sri Lanka

It is the second incident in the month that Sri Lankan navy has arrested Indian fishermen; earlier the navy has seized a boat along with five fishermen from Talaimannar in Tamil Nadu.

The move comes after Sri Lankan Government, in an undertaking to prevent fishermen from Tamil Nadu attempting to overrun the island’s water for poaching; a decision of taking strict action against the boat owners and release fishermen was taken earlier.

Sri Lankan Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Mahinda Amaraweera had earlier said the government will release the poaching Indian fishermen but will confiscate their boats and fishing equipment.
