Thrissur Pooram 2018: Here is what you should know about this colourful festival celebrated in Kerala

Widely celebrated in Kerala, Thrissur Pooram is a vibrant annual happening in Hindu temples. Attracting thousands of people to the Vadakkunnathan Temple annually, this festival is considered as the largest and most popular festival of all other Poorams.

Rising of the Pooram star

The Thrissur festival marks the rise of the moon with the Pooram star every year on the day of Pooram – the day when the moon rises with the Pooram star. It is observed in the Malayalam Calendar month of Medam (April).

The fireworks are lit throughout the night. It also encompasses a bewitching session called ‘Elanjithara Melam’. It is a splendid elephant procession in which the most healthy elephants from across Kerala are sent to The best elephants from the various temples in Kerala are sent to Trichur to participate in the grand eight day Pooram Festival.

The celebration which begins tomorrow morning will witness a procession of elephants flocking from Thiruvambadi temple nearby to the Vadukunnathan temple. Not only this, these elephants also carry the image of Lord Krishna.

The fireworks mark a beginning of new chapter in life. The celebrations of this festival start in the morning and continue till wee hours the next day.

How did it all began?

It was Sakthan Thampuran, who introduced this festival in the late eighteenth century. He is the erstwhile Cochin State emperor.

Air: Nearest Airport Nedumbassery, Ernakulam which is located 60km north from Thrissur.

Rail: The railway station is only 350 meters from the Vadakkunnathan temple.
