Who will be India’s next President?

A question that has set the country’s political corridors buzzing ahead of the presidential polls.

On 17 July, 2017, 4896 electors will cast a total vote of 10,.98,903 votes to elect the next president of India.  This will be the 15th  time the elections will be held for the office of the  President of India

Making it a Dalit VS Dalit battle, the opposition party picked former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as their candidate for the next presidential election against NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind to be held on 17 July.

Prime Minister Modi in his statement said that he was sure that Kovind will make an exceptional President highlighting his humble background.

Calling Meira Kumar a “crusader for social justice “, Azad stated that no one could be a better candidate than her from the opposition.

Meira Kumar, the former Lok Sabha speaker has worked in various Indian missions across the world as an IFS officer. She was also the union minister for Water Resources in the United Progressive Alliance government and served as Lok Sabha speaker from 2009-2014.

Candidate Kovind, Bihar’s governor who represented India in United Nations and addressed united nations general assembly in October 2002 is set to get around 7 lakh votes while the joint opposition candidate Meira Kumar is likely to bag around 4 lakh votes despite the support of many regional parties like the RJD, traditional rivals the SP and the BSP and the TMC and the CPI-M.

However, besides Ram Nath Kovind and Meira Kumar, Saira Bano and Lalu Prasad Yadav are also in the race for the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Let’s wait for the results and hope that whoever wins the presidential elections will give his/her full commitment towards the welfare of the economy and make us proud.
