2016 was not a joyous year for India. It was a year full of ups and downs, joys, celebrations, turmoil and rollercoaster rides. For a country that harbours immense talents and treasures, it was hard to lose 7 of its most precious gems under unusual circumstances.
Here’s a list of our 7 beloved celebrities that are nothing, but a memory recorded in history now.
- Jayalalithaa (Politician)
Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa is fondly remembered as ‘Amma’ by the natives. Being one of the most popular CMs in south India, Amma’s death shook the entire nation to the core. She’s world renowned for showering freebies on the BPL families. Not to mention, the series of ambitious policies introduced in her name were a blessing in disguise for the lower class.
Constantly struggling for her life for two and a half months, Jaya finally lost the battle on 5th December. She passed away due to cardiac chest arrest. The news came as a surprise to hundreds of followers, who lost their life due to shock.
- Nida Fazli (Poet)
“Guzro jo baagh se to dua maangte chalo, jisme khile hain phool, wo daali hari rahe”…
(When you pass by a garden on your way, always pray for the wellbeing of the branches that produce beautiful flowers to please the viewers).
Nida Fazli, the creator of these impressive lines will be remembered for his poetic talents and heart-touching words. A famous poet well-versed in Hindi and Urdu was a creator of famous ghazals and books. Unfortunately, he died of a heart attack on February 8.
- Cho Ramaswamy (Political Advisor/Lawyer/Actor/Editor)
Srinivasa Iyer or Cho Ramaswamy– a man who revived the tales of Tuglaq, was a world-acclaimed political analyst from Tamil Nadu. This veteran celebrity was incredibly talented. His professional career spans around filmmaking, direction, acting, theatre, writing, editing, political advisory, journalism and law. He was an accomplished member of the Rajya Sabha too.
Cho also played the political confidant to Tamil Nadi CM Jayalalithaa. Coincidently, he followed Jayalalithaa in death too. Cho died at the age of 82 due to cardiac arrest, two days after Jaya’s death.
- Mahashweta Devi (Novelist)
Mahashweta Devi was a renowned social activist and Bengali fiction novelist. She’s famous for bestselling literary pieces like Rudali, Aranyer Adhikar and Hajar Churashir Maa. She was the recipient of Ramon Magsaysay Award, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri and Sahitya Academy Award in Bengali literature.
In the last few days of her life, Mahashweta suffered from the infection in kidneys and other blood disorders. She silently passed away on 28th July this year.
- Razak Khan (Comedian)
Veteran comedian and Bollywood actor Razak Khan had performed in more than 90 films in his film career that lasted for 23 years. Some of his most notable performances include Takkar Pehelwan in Akhiyon Se Goli Maare. Despite his lean and weak physique, he possessed incredible acting talents and a great comic timing.
The seasoned comedian died of heart attack on 1st June. He’s buried in a burial ground in Byculla, Mumbai.
- Pratyusha Bannerjee (Actor)
Young and bubbly Pratyusha Banerjee emerged as ‘Balika Vadhu’ (Child Bride) from her role in a famous TV serial for Colors TV. Pratyusha, who was suffering from depression, finally committed suicide on 1st April. Her corpse was found hanging in her Goregaon-based apartment. It was hard for the B-town to accept her death. Many TV stars blamed her long-time boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh for her untimely demise.
- Mufti Mohammad Sayeed (Politician)
The ex-CM of India owned Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was a veteran politician from People’s Democratic Party. He was the first Muslim Home Minister of independent India. He died of multiple organ failure on 7 January.
But, since every ending has a new beginning, we bid our farewell to 2016. With this, we just hope that 2017 will bring happy memories for us to cherish.
