Apple and Lenovo witnessed highest growth in Indian Market: Canalys

Canalys, the leading global technology market analyst firm has disclosed its Q1 2016 report about the Indian smartphone shipments, and has stated that Apple and Lenovo were the most rapidly growing vendors in the period.

According to Canalys, the smartphone market in India grew 12 percent every year in respect of the number of shipments done. There were a total of 24.4 million shipments done in the past year.  The top five vendors which made it to the list were Micromax, Samsung, Lenovo, Lava and Intex out which only Lenovo showed a growth and the statics for the rest were similar to that of the previous years. Wilmer Ang, Canalys Mobility Analyst said, “Apple is outperforming the overall market in India, and still has great growth potential,”Apple’s growth run could be short-lived. The 5s’ success in India has more to do with affordability of a premium brand than a preference for smaller phones, and the move to the more expensive SE will discourage budget buyers. Also, the recent government regulation curbing discounts on smartphones sold by online platforms will affect demand.”

Apple initially had only 11% share in the market which eventually grew to 29% and iPhone 5S became the most sold device of the year by Apple because of its various price cut offs from time to time throughout the year.

Canalys Mobility Analyst, Ishan Dutt, described, “Over the past 18 months, India’s smart phone market has been rocked by dramatic changes. The rise of online channels, the arrival of new international vendors (particularly from China), the move to LTE and the desire for higher-quality devices have all had a big impact. Indian companies have struggled as incoming vendors have been quicker to address these trends. Micromax, in particular, has been through tough times, with key executives leaving. Now the company is aiming to revamp its strategy to incorporate an ecosystem of services around payments and content.”
