Happy Birthday Boman Irani: 5 roles that proved his Mettle as an Actor

Boman Irani Birthday

Boman Irani, one of the finest actors of Indian Cinema, celebrates his birthday today. He is an inspiration to many not only because of his acting skills but because of his journey. While many enter Bollywood with a dream of making it big in the Cinema at a young age, Boman made his debut at the age of 41 when most of the actors think of taking a back seat in their career.

Now known as a famous actor, Irani once used to work as a waiter and also sat at his ancestral store selling chips. Moreover, he was dyslexic and suffered from a speech defect. Nobody would have thought that the same guy would one day become a brilliant performer on the 70 mm screen.

As the star performer turns 58 today, we are here with some of his movies where he played iconic roles that proved his versatile, enigmatic charm on Indian Cinema.

1) Munna Bhai MBBS (2003)

Dr. Asthana is undoubtedly a benchmark in Boman Irani’s career. The way he portrayed the role of the arrogant yet annoyed Dean with a pinch of comedy mixed with hints of tragedy is quite amazing. The movie is about a don who takes vengeance from the old dean for insulting the former’s parents.Boman is seen as a dignified man but he also likes insulting people a lot. He is tough, he is funny and yet he is scary at times. There are so many layers to the character that one instantly falls in love with Dr. Asthana. Even though he played negative, he was appreciated for his acting skills. He was nominated in the best comedian category at Filmfare for this role.

2) Main Hoon Na (2004)

Main Hoon Na was a star-studded film with drama, action, and thrill but the comedy brought by the actors like Bindu, Satish Shah, and Boman Irani in the side characters cannot be given a miss. Talking particularly about Boman Irani, he played the principal who tends to forget things really fast which adds humour to the dramatic story.

He is seen donning the role of a crazy, hilarious man who is supposed to be strict but instead turns out as someone who can make you laugh no matter how serious the situation is. Yet again, he was nominated in the Filmfare best comedian category for this role.

3) Khosla ka Ghosla (2006)

We had seen Boman in a negative role in other films but this one was certainly a masterpiece. Filled with ace actors like Anupam Kher, Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, etc., Boman playing the role of Kishen Khurana made his own special place in the hearts of the viewers.

Unlike commercial masala films, this one is a magnificent artwork where the plot, the acting, the satire, and the situations will make you want more. The story revolves around a simple middle-class family who tries to take back their land from an evil businessman Mr. Khurana. Although the character of Khurana is villainous, Boman’s acting and dialogue delivery is a treat to watch.

Everyone is familiar with the teeth gritting, crazy looking maniac VIRUS in the movie 3 Idiots. Despite the strong message given out by the movie and the classy performance by Amir Khan, Boman Irani’s role remains the most iconic part of the highly-acclaimed movie. It seems like the actor has perfected his skills at playing roles of principal. This particular role had a different look, unique style, and a never-before-seen avatar of the actor. For his phenomenal performance, the actor even bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

5) Jolly LLB (2013)

Often Boman Irani is adored for his fun side in his films but this one was quite different. The portrayal of Advocate Rajpal by Irani is one of his best performances till date. He is cunning, smart, intellectual and yet an evil genius who can turn the tables on anyone. There’s no surprise that the advocate played by Arshad wins as he is fighting for the truth.

However, the turn of events leading to a variation in the situation of Rajpal is really interesting. At one moment he is unbeatable but at the other moment, he becomes vulnerable. This performance yet again is a testimony to the capabilities of the actor.
