PM Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. This you may have heard in the news, but do you know that this is a tribute to which Indian freedom fighter – it is the ‘Iron Man of India’.

With the grand inauguration of this statue, the country will be celebrating the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India.

Adoring him and getting inspired by his valor and intellect, let us glance through the quotes given by him, over his lifetime.

On the occasion of During Quit India Movement, he said: “Today we must remove distinctions of high and low, rich and poor, caste or creed.”

Another quote from the same period is: “We have to shed mutual bickering, shed the difference of being high or low and develop the sense of equality and banish untouchability. We have to restore the conditions of Swaraj prevalent prior to British rule. We have to live like the children of the same father.”

On the day of the arrest of Tara Singh and making an appeal to the East Punjab Govt., he shared his thoughts in these words:

“In a domestic Government unity and co-operation are essential requisites.”

While addressing the Session of the Maharashtra Youth Congress at Nasik, he said: “No distinctions of caste and creed should hamper us. All are the sons and daughters of India. We should all love our country and build our destiny on mutual love and help.”

Amidst the Karachi Congress Session, he said: “As satyagrahis we should always claim and we did – that we are always ready to make peace with our adversaries. As a matter of fact we are always eager for peace and when we found that the door to peace was opened we decided to enter it.”

At a Kisan Conference, he said: “A war based on Satyagraha is always of two kinds. One is the war we wage against injustice and the other we fight against our own weaknesses.”
