It is a time to celebrate freedom and sovereignty by every Indian as India completes 70 years of independence. This day will not only be celebrated in India, in fact, it is scheduled to be celebrated at the United Nations General Assembly on 15 August. And the greater news is that Indian maestro AR Rahman will be performing at the event. The celebrations at the assembly are planned on a grand scale as this two-time Academy Award-winning composer will perform at the event.

He will be performing on a wide range of his albums right from ‘Dil Se’ to the recent ‘Sarsariya’. It is also predicted that Rahman will give a tribute to the legend Rabindranath Tagore by performing on his unique musical rendition `Where the mind is without fear’.

It is a great honor as Rahman would be the second Indian who gets the opportunity of performing on this global stage. Before this, it was our very own and favorite Prime Minister Narendra Modi who proposed to set in motion all the uniqueness and amazing things about India while addressing United Nations (UN) in 2014. Earlier to this, images of various Yoga aasans and poses were displayed at the United Nations headquarters in New York to mark World Yoga Day on June 21.

It is decided that a photo exhibition would be held on the occasion of the birth centenary of India’s Carnatic music legend Dr. M S Subbulakshmi during 15-19 August 2016 at the United Nations. It is the 50th anniversary of her performance at the United Nations as she was the first Indian artist to perfrom at the UN gathering. The exhibition will showcase the different achievements, facts and moments of Dr. M S Subbulakshmi’s life along with providing a rare glimpse of her achievements.

As per the announcement, Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar would be attending the events.

“As India celebrates its 70th Independence Day, the event will emphasize that the wisdom of Indian traditions remains relevant to current global thinking,” the Indian Mission to the UN said in a statement on Thursday. It is planned to be organized by the permanent Mission of India to the United Nations with the assistance of Sankara Nethralaya, an India-based civil society organization.

It is to be noted that the United Nations is also celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and this event will depict the dynamism and gaiety of India.

Various well-known dignitaries from the United Nations, Permanent Missions to the United Nations, Permanent Observers to the United Nations, UN specialized agencies and other invited guests from the international community will be attending the event.
