India’s massive order of 770 million LED bulbs brings 83% decline in their prices

In just 20 months the price of LED light bulbs has fallen from Rs 310 to Rs 54.9, which is an 83 per cent plunge seen because of India’s massive order of 770 million in number. Piyush Goyal, India’s minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy, was quite elated while he stated out his fact in the media.

This is all a direct result of a country level plan known as DELP. It stands for Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme, a plan which entails the substitution of regular high watt bulbs with low rated and subsidized LED light bulbs for the households. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one big supporter of this plan, which is made to cut India’s energy consumption and help to maintain less energy wastage. That’s an attractive outcome mainly because most of India is still not electrified yet and if the nation uses a reduced amount of power it can be possible to connect more communities to the network without investing in quite so much generation power. PM Modi also reckons that his householders won’t mind cheaper power bills. He has made the scheme plank of India’s plan to reduce CO2 emissions. Also the fact that these LEDs last longer than glowing bulbs doesn’t hurt either. Thus in so in many ways it is a convenient and efficient plan.

The scheme has already recorded over 50 million LED bulbs being distributed and India’s supposedly placed massive orders with manufacturers as it chases a target of 770 million LED bulbs. No wonder the price is getting cheaper and the nation may well be scoring bulk purchase discounts.
