Rajasthan’s Bhilwara among 19 drought facing districts, getting water via trains

Along with current attention grabber Latur which is drought hit area nowadays, 19 districts of Rajasthan are also reportedly suffering from parched patches. The main out of these is Bhilwara which is most need of water. As the summer season comes by, Rajasthan being a desert area becomes the easiest target for draught to settle in. It’s not just Bhilwara but many other places which require water carrying trains to quench the thirst they are suffering from.

According to the state government, “with the villages in western and southern Rajasthan, the state became the worst drought hit area”

Revenue Department has searched results showing, 17,000 out of 44,672 villages as “famine-affected areas” with 19 out of 33 districts are stuck under the shaking roofs of water scarcity.

Main drought hit cities are namely Ajmer, Nagaur, Pali, Churu, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jhunjhunu, Baran, Jaipur, Chittorgarh, Dungarpur, Banswara, Rajsamand, Hanumangarh, Jalore, Bhilwara, Pratapgarh and Udaipur.

Kiran Maheshwari, Minister of Public Health and Engineering said, “The government is ready, and that the department has started working towards containing the crisis. We were prepared for such a situation and had put in place a contingency plan in February. Water is being supplied to affected areas through trains and other means. Besides arrangements for water supply, we have sanctioned Rs 50 lakh to each affected district to take up works for improving water supply,”

An official in the Agriculture Ministry stated, “Right now, the problem is drinking water scarcity, which is being looked into by PHED. We are yet to assess the effects of the situation on farmers. It wouldn’t have much impact on crops since much of the harvest has already been done.”
