What is Earth Hour Day and Why is it celebrated?

Access of electricity is a concerning issue in the world especially in the developing countries like India. And thus WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) came up with an initiative to save electricity for the future generations.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the preservation of electricity as much as possible. The event is conducted worldwide annually, cheering and motivating individuals, communities and households to switch off their unnecessary lights for an hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of March every year as a symbol for their pledge to the planet.

It was Australia’s Sydney where for the very first time the movement was initiated in 2007. After its successful implementation, it gained positive growth and was spread throughout the world. The movement has been able to involve more and more enthusiasts for the brilliant cause.

The timing of 08:30pm to 09:30pm has been selected by the organizers with a very wise thought. They aimed at making more impact and thus the timings were such selected that the ‘light out’ would bring more darkness and thus would be more impactful.

The officials further hope that this one hour timing would be extended if more people come forward to do their bit and by doing the same the world would eventually save more electricity for the generations to come.
