Gati Gaum: Rajasthan’s First Internationally Certified Organic Village in Udaipur

Udaipur’s Gati Gaum village was earlier known for its prosperity, lively fish market and awe-inspiring local Gavari ceremonies, but there’s more to it than this. In a short span of just one year, Gati Gaum has pioneered in global organic farming—thanks to the dexterous villagers of Jaisamand. Having received AOCA’s approval (APOF Organic Certification Agency), the farmers can market their agricultural produce in the international markets today. The prestigious organic validation covers 290 fields managed by local farmer families. With this, Gati Gaum becomes Rajasthan’s first globally certified organic village—a commendable milestone for all farming communities.

Hard Work and Commitment was all it Took to Get the Prestigious AOCA Certification

40 meetings conducted over a span of nearly one year—that’s how the villagers in Gati Gaum achieved the organic certification. The meetings were conducted under ‘Organic Jaisamand Initiative’—a brainchild of Udaipur BMCT (Big Medicine Charitable Trust). All proceedings were funded by an international organization named Presbyterian Hunger Project. The PHP is known to invest in projects involving welfare, sustainability and sound health of farmers around the world. Jagran Jan Vikas Samiti administered this project.

The villagers were doubtful regarding the project outcomes, at first. Some were afraid of embracing organic farming completely, whereas others were confused because agriculture experts promoted chemical pesticides and fertilizers for plant growth.

Mr. Pannalal Patel, the project director, congratulated all Gati Gaum farmers, especially women for their breakthrough efforts. The project required villagers to understand the importance of organic farming for a healthy and prosperous state. Taking inspiration from this success, the JJVS initiated the first women-owned organic production center in Mewar. They hit two birds with a single stone—produce lip-smacking marketable delicacies, such as chutneys and provide employment to youth and women in Udaipur.

Patel has recently revived herbal healing customs and medicinal plant gardens in Mewar. Though his contributions are precious, one just can’t overlook the efforts of Gati farmers. They’ve put in their heart and soul into their fields. They preserved native agricultural practices and kept agro-chemical pollution at bay. Their work and wisdom contributes a great share to organic practices inherited by younger generations.

Rajasthan’s first fully organic village has opened new possibilities for employment. Organic consciousness has grown significantly in last few years, but Rajasthan is lagging far behind in this sector. Community projects like these not only boost agricultural growth, but also enhance local demands. Now, organizers are inviting entrepreneurs, investors and media partners to help them spread this message all over the state.
