A wave of joy ran through the world of Astronomy when Indian scientists lately announced that they have detected  gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time, which Albert Einstein had predicted a century ago.

Indian scientists have created history by doing so. The announcement was done from Pune on Thursday. Institute of Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar, Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, and Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore, were involved in the research which has made the nation immensely proud. It has been achieved by a team of 1000 scientists from all around the world including 37 scientists from India who worked day and night to make this landmark discovery.

Prime minister too it to the micro-blogging site to express his joy on this milestone achieved and the great contribution of the Indian scientists for the discovery.0

He said, ““Historic detection of gravitational waves opens up new frontier for understanding of universe!

Immensely proud that Indian scientists played an important role in this challenging quest.

Hope to move forward to make even bigger contribution with an advanced gravitational wave detector in the country.”

This is probably one of the biggest achievements if the history of physics and astronomy.

Bravo !
