Justice Dipak Mishra sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of India

Justice Dipak Mishra was on Monday sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of India (CJI). His name was recommended by his predecessor and outgoing CJI JS Khehar had recommended his name as his successor last month. Justice Mishra will serve a tenure of almost 14 months which will end on October 2, 2018.

Verdicts and orders pronounced by Justice Mishra

Mishra grabbed limelight when he helmed the three-judge bench to dismiss 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon’s plea to avert his execution.

Subsequently, in May 2017, Justice Mishra studied and announced death penalty for the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape-murder case.

Another mandatory order which he pronounced was that all cinema theatres must play the national anthem before playing the movie. He also drew a lot of flak for the same.

A glimpse into Justice Mishra’s past life

Born and brought up in a small town in Orissa, Justice Mishra has outpaced the test of time in being accorded as the top-level judge in the apex court.

Justice Mishra has practiced in Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, Revenue, Service and Sales Tax matters in the Orissa High Court and the Service Tribunal.

In 2009, his appointment as the chief justice of the Patna High Court was followed by a meaningful time at the Delhi HC, after which he successfully climbed the stairs to the Supreme Court in 2011.
