Unbelievable Yet True: India tops both global lists of UNDERWEIGHT and OBESITY

We Indians got all active in providing good diets to other fellow citizens after the news came out that the nation is topping the list of people with underweight. Just then another contradictory factual news pooped in stating that the same nation is also among the top 5 countries with obese people.  Yes, yes it is quite confusing and absurd to some extent, but very much true and undeniable.

Not much before did we get the news of India leading the world in being a globally underweight population with 102 million men and 101 million women underweight, adding up to 40% of the total population falling under this category. Our country has entered into another weight related list with zooming into the 5th position globally with 9.8 million obese men, or 3.7% of the global obese men’s population and among women, India has jumped to the third rank with 20 million obese women or 5.3% of global population.

According to a study conducted by Majid Ezzati, professor at the School of Public Health, Imperial College London, “If these trends continue, by 2025, global obesity prevalence will reach 18% in men and surpass 21% in women”.

It’s high time we Indians should strap our belts in a balancing manner. The people should neither fall short of food nor should they be with excess of it. To know the exact diet balance is becoming necessary for every one of us.
